In a convergence of politics, cryptocurrency, and foreign investment, President Donald Trump and his family have become central figures in a complex web of financial ventures. At the heart of this network is World Liberty Financial (WLF), a decentralized finance company closely linked to the Trump family. Notably, WLF received a substantial $2 billion investment from MGX Fund Management Limited, a state-backed entity established by the Abu Dhabi government. This investment utilized WLF’s stablecoin, USD1, to facilitate a significant transaction involving Binance, the cryptocurrency exchange.
The Trump family’s involvement in cryptocurrency goes deeper. In January 2025, Trump launched the $TRUMP meme coin on the Solana blockchain. Of the 1 billion total tokens minted, two Trump-owned companies retained 800 million. The remaining 200 million were offered to the public. After its launch, the $TRUMP coin’s market value skyrocketed—at one point exceeding $27 billion. By March 2025, it had generated at least $350 million through token sales and fees.
Despite these enormous gains, Trump has publicly downplayed his knowledge of the ventures. On a visit to Saudi Arabia, he claimed ignorance about the $2 billion crypto deal involving Abu Dhabi, even while generally endorsing cryptocurrency. This tactic—deflection through plausible deniability—mirrors past controversies surrounding his business entanglements.
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has not officially launched an investigation, but experts say the high-profile nature of the deal and the involvement of foreign state-backed funds could quietly trigger regulatory scrutiny.
This situation raises urgent questions: How should foreign crypto investments in politically exposed persons be regulated? What ethical obligations should former leaders have when accepting foreign capital, especially in opaque crypto ecosystems?
As Trump’s crypto empire grows, the lines between influence, investment, and political immunity are becoming dangerously blurred.
