Shvets claimed the KGB saw Trump’s vanity and ambition as exploitable traits, leading to a long-term cultivation strategy. Journalist Craig Unger echoed these claims, suggesting Trump’s actions—such as criticizing NATO and admiring Russian leadership—aligned with Russian interests.

Trump’s financial history reveals connections with Russian individuals and entities. In the 2000s, the Bayrock Group, a real estate firm with ties to Russian oligarchs, partnered with Trump on various projects, including the Trump SoHo in New York. These ventures provided significant financial benefits to Trump, raising questions about potential influence.

During his 2016 presidential campaign, Trump’s team had multiple contacts with Russian nationals. Notably, campaign manager Paul Manafort shared polling data with Konstantin Kilimnik, a figure linked to Russian intelligence. Additionally, Trump’s public statements often appeared to favor Russian positions, such as questioning NATO and downplaying Russian interference in U.S. elections.
